Skipper of Zambia and one time Jomo Cosmos captain, Christopher ‘Tsunami’ Katongo has been picked by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as Best Player of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

He succeeds former Egypt skipper Ahmed Hassan, who was voted Best Player of the 2010 edition in Angola.

The China-based striker also notched three goals to emerge as one of the leading scorers at this year’s tournament, but it was his Zambia teammate Emmanuel Mayuka, also on three goals, who was voted Goal King of the 2012 Afcon.

Katongo was a major inspiration behind his country’s first-ever Nations Cup triumph on Sunday night in Libreville, Gabon as the Chipolopolo beat Ivory Coast 8-7 on penalties to win the prestigious prize.

Christopher and his younger brother Felix, also a former Jomo Cosmos player were among the penalty takers for Chipolopolo.

Both Katongo and Mayuka as well as goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene and central defender Stoppila Sunzu were picked by CAF in their Tournament XI, while the outstanding Rainford Kalaba made the bench.

Ivory Coast won the Fair Play Award.
